In IX century a rock fortress and city Tustan was founded.

The strange shape of the rocks served as a natural form of walls and spaces between rocks were filled with wood by the builders.
Tustan was a strategically important point and was a part of the Carpathian line of defense for borders of Kyiv Rus and later of Galicia-Volyn Kingdom. The fortress existed at the crossroads of trade routes as a customs control point to the Carpathian passes.

Some suggest that the complex of Uruch’s rocks is a sanctuary, astronomical calendar associated with the movement of Sun.

Today Tustan is a monument of nature and archeology of national importance, which has no analogues in Europe.

In early September thousands of guests come to the village Urych from all over Ukraine at Ukrainian Festival of medieval culture "Tu Stan!" And again, fortress is alive. Swords and arrows can be seen and whistle and music can be heard. The blacksmiths and potters are working, merchants are selling their goods. Music and dances are everywhere.
